Coachella '07

The Coachella lineup was announced today. A handful of high school girls are excited about Rage headlining; the rest of the world is scratching its head.

Bjork. Rage Against the Machine. Red Hot Chili Peppers. Jesus and Mary Chain. Sonic Youth. Happy Mondays. What is this, Coachella or a mid 90s Lollapalooza?

Oh, and one more thing: Crowded House?

But I will say this -- I bet Tokyo Police Club would be a good set.

You're pretty much right-on with the mid 90's Lollapalooza reference. 1992 to be exact. Check this:

I just couldn't pass up cracking on RATM. Other than that it's a pretty solid show.

Holy crap. I was at the '92 and '93 Lollapaloozas. Those were a lifetime ago. Has there been no band or artist good enough to take up the standard of headlining a freakin' music festival since then? How sad.

It's weird trying to convince my teenaged brother and sister that I knew their favorite bands were cool fifteen years before they did.

That said, I would love to see a reunited Rage Against the Machine. Their first album is a classic, and Audioslave really kinda blows.

I saw Crowded House years (in the 90's) at SummerFest and they were suprisingly good in concert. It would be fun to go and heckle Jarvis Cocker and then go check out Rufus Wainwright...but I have never liked Rage. Never. Not even a little. Ok, I like the guitar work, but their lead singer annoys me and I have to think to myself...what does this little shit know? He's singing about freeing that native american and I'm thinking - your some white boy from LA, wtf do you know about injustice? why the fuck should I listen to you when all you can say is to repeat - fuck you over and over again? Now, I'll listen to Chuck D. because he has something to say and he says it. Hey, de la Rocha, fuck you white boy. But I do like Morello's guitar work.

For the record, Zack de la Rocha is Latino.

And while I agree that his lyrics are often misguided, I still remember the sense of release when I, and about ten thousand of my fellow Gen-Xers, jumped up and down screaming "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!" That's what I liked about Rage Against the Machine: They were angry and aggressive so I didn't have to be.

That said, I don't like what they've spawned. Crap bands like Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park never would have happened if it weren't for RATM.

And Rage Against the Machine never would have happened without Anthrax and Public Enemy.

I've been listening to Bach's Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme. It's beautiful so I don't have to be.

And Anthrax & Public Enemy would never have happened without Aerosmith and Run DMC.

And Bach would never have happened without Johann Pachelbel.

"[Johann Pachelbel] did not have much influence on the most important composers of the late Baroque such as Johann Sebastian Bach." And that's an unsourced quote from the internet. So there.
