LYRC - Hillary Clinton
I've often argued that if Hillary Clinton made a presidential run, she'd lose because Republicans simply hated her way too much. While I still believe that GOP hatred for Hillary is profound, incomprehensible and limitless, I no longer think that her aspirations are doomed as a result. (After all, galvanized hatred for Bush among liberals didn't stop him from becoming president). In fact, I think that circumstances could actually be working in her favor. Republicans have transformed media outlets (cable chat shows, op-ed columns, talk radio, et al.) into their own personal fiefdoms – they are the mainstream media; yet they continue to insist that they are providing an "alternative" to a fictive liberal media. In so positioning themselves, they have created forums where opinion and news are blurred, where demagoguery (as well as racism, homophobia & sexism) is redefined and defended as "entertainment". In this environment, right-wing media personalities have a long and infamous record of slandering and defaming Hillary for sport. Simply put, they are highly prone to make comments about Hillary that are extremely sexist and offensive. All things being equal, that's fine. Hell, it's the American way. But it's hard to imagine that such rhetoric will sit well with right-wing's brand new audience: the mainstream.
Peggy Noonan, Dick Morris and others have written entire books about how terrible Hillary is. Of course, these books mainly focus on ephemeral and subjective assertions about her personality. (In Noonan's case, much of what she's written about Hillary is literally and intentionally fictional). Have these books swayed public opinion? Not if getting elected to the U.S. Senate is any measure of public opinion. For all their disdain for Hillary, there's actually very little – if anything – on which they can hang their ideological hat. Hillary is being discussed with increasing frequency as a potential frontrunner in 2008, and the rhetoric from the right is stuttering and bereft of substance. When they're not making a mockery of her gender, they have surprisingly little to say.
Personally, I know of nothing that should prevent Hillary from running for – or becoming – President of the United States. I could be wrong. But if she ultimately decides to run, I'll take her as-yet-unread autobiography off my bookshelf and see what's inside. It's all academic, however, because we all know that a gay penguin would be a better President than the current occupant of the White House.
ADDENDUM: Here is an excellent example of how Hillary breaks the rules to win at any cost. Her soul is clearly wicked, and this evidence is as damning as any you're likely to find.

All you have said is how hated she seems to be by the Republicans. Can't we EVER get away from US vs. THEM and talk about ISSUES instead of bashing the Democrats and Republicans. There are GREAT guys and gals on BOTH sides.
I was going to post an uproariously funny anonymous comment but somebody beat me to it.
Anonymous: There is a galactic GOP media machine that has been grinding out smears and lies about Hillary for years… and you’re taking me to task for mentioning it? It’s a booming industry, and was successful enough to convince me – an avowed liberal – that she was unelectable! This isn’t about qualified people on BOTH sides, it’s about the smokescreens of bullshit that one political party has used to deliberately guide the debate away from the issues. Perhaps you should direct your plea to “get away from US vs. THEM” to Rupert Murdoch, Roger Ailes, Richard Mellon Scaife, The Olin Foundation, Joe Coors, and Rev. Sun Myung Moon – they seem rather more wedded to the concept that I.
...now that was funny.
Can I get an "Amen"!? Can I get a "Hail Satan"?!
I would also like to reinstitute the policy of giving names to Anonymous posters:
Anonymous the first--your use of the word "gals" makes it quite obvious that you are Burt Reynolds.
Anonymous the second--you are George Leroy "Porgie" Tirebiter. Because I say so.
I shall adhere to Richards rules - Hail Satan.
Burt Reynolds still thinks there is a Republican party, isn't that cute.
News Item: Even Ike's kid knows that there is no longer a Republican party, the party of his father. The Neo-Cons are not fiscally responsible, are not promoting smaller government, are interfering with personal liberties, and are lying through their teeth when they say they are Republicans. They are fascists.
Ah, Fockerino. Let's not forget that Richard was dead-on correct when he said that superheros are fascists at heart. So are cowboys. Fascism, it would appear, is the spice of life.
I had some Fascism on fries once and sent them back. The real spice of life is pussy. Lots and lots of pussy. Even a lot of girls like pussy. Come to think of it, some super heros are pussies. I'm going to predict that in this bold new century, pussy is going to give Fascism a run for its money.
Pussy Power!
Hillary Clinton wrote a great legal opinion about the transition of minors to adults. The gist of her opinion is that the law treats you as an incompetent object for 17 years 364 days and then BOOM, you're an a adult with full rights and responsibilities. Her opinion was that the law doesn't reflect the reality of the transition that teenagers go through as they approach adulthood. She, I feel, argues correctly that the law should take a child's growing capabilities into account with regards to his or her legal rights.
For example, a child's parents are leaving the U.S. to return to their country of origin, Horribletopia. The kid is 8. The kid goes with the parents. End of discussion. But if the kid is 16, the law says he or she must go with the parents. Hillary might argue that a 16 year old should have a lot more say about whether or not to return to Horribletopia. Legally, this is even true if the kid is 17 and 11/12 years old.
So, the law is too black and white, in Senator Clinton's opinion, and I would agree.
I also am a big fan of the kinds of changes Hillary Clinton tried to make to health care coverage. My overall point is that there are a number of things about Clinton that I like and I'm inclined to like her.
With this in mind, I would now like to say that Hillary Clinton has the personality of a shoebox, has little charisma, and would make a horrible, horrible candidate for President. It's amazing that in this day and age Democrats still haven't figured out that a candidate for President has to have good ideas and have charisma. Mike Dukakis didn't have both, John Kerry didn't, Tom Harkin didn't, the Senator from Massachusetts who got cancer didn't. The only candidate who had both in the last 40 years was Bill Clinton.
I knew Bill Clinton, he was a president of mine for 8 years, I had a chance to see Bill Clinton in person and Senator Hillary Clinton, you're no Bill Clinton.
Can we please stop talking about Hillary for President and get a real candidate?
