It was around 1902 that the pacifier took on the shape that we all recognize today. It evolved directly from the early teething rings, many of which were manufactured with a choice of black, maroon or white rubber.
Over the years the pacifier has taken on a general standard appearance—protrusion, mouth shield and handle—but in reality the pacifier can be anything that soothes the baby.
