This weekend an exhibit opened in Los Angeles. It's called Dark Pastoral:
The installation features a larger-than-life leather body builder torso, mounted on computer controlled pneumatic lifts, somewhat like a mechanical bull. Equipped with stirrups and a conveniently located "panic" switch, Viewers will be allowed and encouraged to ride the sculpture at their own risk.
Whenever I’m feeling low about world affairs, some implausible development in the art world provides me with a fresh reason to live. I don't suppose it's possible to defend the abolishment of the National Endowment for the Arts while you're tipsy drunk and humping a mysterious sculpture "emitting an aroma reminiscent [of] those lucky enough to be familiar with it"; at least not without being heartily laughed at. My favorite picture is of two balding dudes mounting the oily torso simultaneously. Now that is a freedom worth fighting for.
